How to easily speed up your BSNL BroadBand Connection

I just found this article which discusses 3 important tips to significantly speed up your internet access through BSNL Dataone broadband connection / most other BroadBand connections like Reliance or Tata Indicom or Sify Broadband .

Tip 1: One of the major problems with BSNL Dataone Broadband connection is the DNS servers they provide by default. Most of the time they are very slow and sometimes they fail to respond. I noticed that I am starting to spend a significant amount of time in DNS resolution with Dataone connection, often it is larger than the time it takes to actually get the reponse. Here is a simple solution to significantly speed up your DNS resolution.

Open up the network connection profile and edit TCP/IP settings. In the DNS server address fields, specify the following DNS server addresses: and
Disconnect the connection and then connect again. You are done.

This specifies third party DNS servers which are significantly faster than BSNL Dataone’s DNS servers.

Note: The service is provided by OpenDNS.

Tip 2: Firefox users can use FlashBlock extension to prevent downloading of Flash content by default, thereby significantly speeding up browsing experience. You can click on the placeholder icon to display the original Flash content any time. This is more of a passive tip in that reduces data usage to improve your overall experience.

Tip 3: You can try to increase your broadband bandwidth tweaking the TCP/IP parameters. The process is simplified by using TCPOptimizer, a free tool. It helped me a lot but your mileage may vary.

Also, there's nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes. This also affects your Broadband peformance. You can get back this 20% as follows:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "
This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->
Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this
setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.
This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

I have tested the above procedure on Windows 2000 , XP Pro , XP SP-1 & XP SP-2 only. But not tested other o/s.
Awaiting for feedback about your results too!

How to Bypass Megaupload country limit

Megaupload is a file hoster just like Rapidshare that has restrictions set in place for guests that are downloading files from their website. Everyone who wants to download a file from Megaupload has to wait a certain time before they can start the download. Another restriction is a so called country limit. If the maximum number of downloaders from a specific country has been reached all others from that country will have to wait until the amount of downloaders drops below that figure.

The message that appears reads: “All download slots (number) assigned to your country (name) are in use. Several ways to bypass the country limit exist and I would like to explain two of them and hint to others that can also be used if the need arises. The first one has been around for a while. You do need to download the User Agent Switcher add-on for Firefox or edit the registry in Windows if you are using the Internet Explorer.

Click on Tools, User Agent Switcher and select Options.. Options from the menu. Click on User Agents in the new tab and then on ADD. It is only important to fill out the first two fields. Name the first any way you want, Megaupload for instance. Copy and Paste the following line in the second field.

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; Alexa Tool bar)

Internet Explorer:

In Internet Explorer you have to edit the registry. For IE7 and IE6 navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\User Agent\Post Platform.

Right-Click Post Platform and select New String Value and name it Alexa Toolbar.

Firefox users need to switch to the User Agent that they have created before they click on a download link. Do this by clicking on Tools, User Agent Switcher and choosing the name (megaupload) that you entered during the creation.

The second method would be to enter the megaupload website indirectly by using a service that does not reveal where you are coming from. Two services that come to my mind are Google translate and anonym.to

How to Force Windows Vista Into Reduced Functionality Mode

Today at I will show you a little trick. You will actually have little use for this, but it is a source of great fun. I will show you how to put a copy of Windows Vista into Reduced Functionality Mode.

If you have been keeping up with Vista, you already have been able to read details about Reduced Functionality Mode. I even provided you with the means to configure Vista in order to facilitate via the Standard User Product Activation Website. Today, I will do the opposite and reveal how you will be able to make Vista enter RFM.

But why would you want to do that? As I have already said, there is a good side to this. Namely, system administrators can test a copy of Vista that has been configured for Standard User activation.

The actual process of putting Windows Vista into Reduced Functionality Mode is quite simple. On a system with a fresh copy of Vista installed but not activated, advance the operating system's clock by 31 days and restart the computer. Microsoft is delivering full functionality for Windows Vista, even though the OS is not activated for a grace period of 30 days.

If the user fails to activate Windows Vista within this grace period, the operating system will expire and automatically move into Reduced Functionality Mode, and allow only one hour of browser usage per day felicitating the activation.

Now didn't I say that you could have a lot of fun with this? I did... Well imagine this scenario. You've got a friend with a brand new copy of Vista Ultimate in his hand. He paid $399 for it and he can't wait to install it. You offer your assistance in the matter. Install the operating system, and then convince him to wait a couple of days with the activation.

The minute he steps away from the computer, advance the system clock by 31 days and reboot. Then make sure you tell him that his copy is pirated. Or that a hacker just broke in and stole the product key. Or that Microsoft claims that he attempted to crack the Windows Genuine Process and is looking to pursue legal action. And just watch him sweat, and bitch! Of course that the reduced functionality mode will allow you to activate the operating system. No harm done, you just wanted to have a bit of fun.

How to convert your Windows XP Home Edition Into Windows XP Professional

I have come across a hacking technique that promises no less than to transform Windows XP Home Edition into Windows XP Professional. Applying the hack will enable all the features specific on Windows XP Professional on a Windows XP Home Edition. The hacking technique works with a copy of Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.

The following hack has been altered via segments of “xxx” used to conceal the actual information. In its present state, the fragment presented below is no longer a valid hack for transforming Windows XP Home Edition into Windows XP Professional. It is presented here only for informative purposes, as Jason S does not support piracy of any manner.

1. Copy the xxxxx and the xxxxx of the WindowsXP CD to your hard drive.
2. Extract the xxxxxx of your Windows XP CD. You can use xxxxx to do this.
4. Highlight xxx
5. Click FILE-->xx xx and select the xxx file
This file is located in the xxx folder. Use the one you extracted to your hard drive from your Windows XP CD.
6. Locate the following registry key:
7. Edit the DEFAULT key and change the following values:
01 to xxx
02 to xxx
8. Change the name to the value xxx to anything.
9. Locate the following registry key:
Edit the DEFAULT key and change the following values:
01 to xxx
02 to xxx
10. Highlight xxx and select FILE-->xxx

Following the successful accomplishment of the instructions presented above, users have to make a bootable Windows XP CD with the hacked version of the operating system. Although now the copy of Windows XP Home Basic will have all the features of Windows XP Professional, the XP Home serial key will still be valid.

How to easily Recover a Document in Microsoft Word

If Word freezes and you lose unsaved information in a document, you may be able to recover it. To do this:
  • Open Tools g Options and click the File Locations tab
If the space next to AutoRecover files is blank, then your data is lost. If there is a location, simply go to that location and open the document.

How to Duplicate the Right Mouse Click on a Standard Keyboard

I recently came across this super cool tip of How to Duplicate the Right Mouse Click on a Standard Keyboard. Here's how...
Select a file. Pressing the Shift + F10 key will be the same as clicking the right-mouse button.

Mouse and Keyboard Tips and Tricks

Keyboard Speed | Mouse Keys | Keyboard Browsing | Copy a File with a Mouse/Keyboard Combo

  • Keyboard Speed
You can adjust several settings to suit your preference:
    • Repeat rate: A measure of how many times per second that characters are repeated once you've held down the key long enough to begin repeating letters, numbers, or symbols
    • Repeat delay: A measure of how long you must hold down a key before that character repeats
    • Cursor blink rate: This setting doesn't affect your typing speed. Rather, it controls how quickly the cursor blinks on and off
To access these keyboard settings, choose Start g (Settings g) Control Panel g Keyboard. Next, choose the Speed tab. You'll see slider controls for the three settings. Adjust them as you wish.

  • Mouse Keys
Have you ever wondered if there was a way to move your mouse pointer around without using your mouse?
    • Go to Start g (Settings g) Control Panel (this must be done before losing the Mouse) and select the Accessibility Options icon
    • Click on the Mouse tab and check the "Use Mouse Keys" option
    • Click OK, and press the Alt + Shift + Num Lock buttons and you can use your numeric keypad to move your pointer instead of a mouse

  • Keyboard Browsing
You can use the Tab, Shift, and Enter keys to navigate the World Wide Web.
    • Use the Tab key to step through links on a page
    • When a desired link is highlighted, press Enter to go there
    • To step backward through the links (bottom of the page to the top) press Shift + Tab

  • Copy a File with a Mouse/Keyboard Combo
Drag the file while holding down the CTRL key. A "+" will appear on the icon. When you release the mouse button a copy of the file will be created.

How to Go Back in Internet Explorer Without a Back Button

You can often navigate or work with a browser window that doesn't display your browser buttons right-clicking inside the window and selecting Back, Forward, or Refresh from the resulting menu (be sure you're not clicking a picture when you do this or you're not going to get those options).

How to Speed Up Your Typing with AutoCorrect in Microsoft Word

This is a tip to speed up your work. Do send me some feedback on whether you like these tips coming up on my blog and if they are useful?
If you find yourself typing long words again and again, it may be worth considering setting up typing shortcuts so you only need to type in part of the word and Word fills in the rest. For example, if you need to type "Business Intelligence" you could simply type BI and then press the SPACEBAR. Word then automatically completes the word/term.
  1. Open Word and on the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options... and select the Replace text as you type check box
  2. In the Replace box, type an abbreviation you will remember (e.g. BI)
  3. In the With box, type the complete spelling of the word (e.g. Business Intelligence)
  4. Click Add. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to add additional terms, then click OK

You can also use this tip to quickly type people's names, technical terms and so on. And once you add a term to your AutoCorrect list, it also works in PowerPoint.

Simple steps to activate Windows Vista illegally?

This seems to be the best working method to activate either Microsoft Windows Vista Business or Vista Enterprise. Please note that the following method won’t be working with other editions of Windows Vista because it was purely implemented to make it easier for large companies to activate a large numbers of operating systems. I would also like to point out that I’m merely describing how it can be done - it is still illegal to activate Windows Vista this way.

Microsoft Windows Vista Volume Activation 2.0 is a new service for companies that offers them the ability to run a KMS (Key Management Service) to handle the activation of a large number of computers at once. It was only a matter of time until someone took advantage of this method to “crack” this service and offer a standalone VMWare solution. What this means is that you have to options to activate Windows Vista for 180 days.

The first would be to find a public KMS server on the internet and activate your Vista edition using the following instructions:

  • You need to login using the admin account to perform the following steps.
  • Deactivate the Windows Firewall
  • Hit Windows+R and enter cmd
  • type the following lines and hit enter after each line
  • slmgr.vbs -ipk “Enter Vista serial here without “” of course”
  • slmgr.vbs -skms “IP of public kms server, again without “” please”
  • wait for notification
  • slmgr.vbs -ato
  • wait for notification
  • If the server was available Vista should now be activated for 180 days and has to be re-activated after that period

The second method would mean that you would have to download the hacked VMWare image of the KMS server and run it on your own computer. If you are using this method the IP of the KMS server would be of course - everything else would remain as is.

The all new Opera 9.10 web browser finally released

A new version of the cool internet browser Opera has been released and can be downloaded from the main ftp site for windows, mac and linux. The official website has not been updated yet which means you should have enough time to download the file you need before the masses slow down the servers.

I could not find any announcements or release notes which means that I can’t write about the changes in this version to the prior version 9.02 but I was not able to spot major differences doing a quick look around. If you are looking for a fast browser that uses less ram than Firefox but offers lots of functionality that Firefox offers with its extensions Opera might be the ideal browser for you.

Beta Version of Thunderbird 2 Released!!

Mozilla has released the first beta for the 2.0 version of its popular email client, Thunderbird. Although it’s still a little rough around the edges and it isn't supposed to be used for everyday activity, this beta version hosts a large number of promising new features. If you're part of the testing community or simply love to live on the bleeding edge, the new version of Thunderbird will offer you the following new features:

Message Tags: Create your own tags to organize your email. Any number of tags can be assigned to the messages. Tags can be combined with saved searches and mail views to make it easier to organize email.
Visual Theme: Thunderbird 2's theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability.
Session History Navigation: Back and Forward buttons allow navigation through message history.
Folder Views: Customize the folder pane to show favorite, unread or recent folders.
Improved Support For Extensions: Extensions can now add custom columns to the message list pane in addition to storing custom message data in the mail database.
Improved Offline Management: Thunderbird (Linux and Windows) automatically adjusts the offline state based on current network connectivity.
Improved New Mail Notification Alerts: New mail alerts include information such as the subject, sender and message text.
Folder Summary Popups: Mouse over a folder with new messages to see a summary of the new messages in that folder.
Saved Search Folder Performance: Search results for saved search folders are now cached, improving folder loading performance. Find As You Type.
Improved Filing Tools: Recent folder menu items to move and copy folders to recently used folders. Move / Copy again functionality.
Updates to the extension system: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.

On the downside, the overall performance is pretty much the same: rather slow. The IMAP performance is still slow but then again, there isn't really an email program that provides a fast IMAP service. However, there are a few performance improvements such as the POP mail speed, which is excellent and even more, switching between folders, views and mailboxes is notably faster.

Unfortunately, this release is very beta. It can't be used fulltime, but by the looks of this early release, Thunderbird 2.0 will be worth the wait. Until the final 2.0 release, you can play around with this beta version and you can help the developers by reporting bugs.

Fedora Core 6 Live CD on track

David Zeuthen announced on the fedora-devel-list that it was the time to get more serious about having a LiveCD for Fedora Core 6 along the usual Fedora release processes: "..during the Fedora Summit it was decided that it was time to get more serious with having Live CD's as part of the Fedora release processes. Part of this includes building a Live CD with software from Core 6 and Extras 6. I've created a Wiki page for tracking this work (feel free to contribute)."

The primary goal of this LiveCD will be to do a hard disk install from the CD without requiring network connectivity: "I've got the "install to hard disk" feature done but at this point only as a proof of concept...The plan is to completely integrating Live CD creation into the Fedora release process including daily Live CD builds of Rawhide. Then we can start doing the "install to hard disk" feature." -says David Zeuthen in a recent email. This LiveCD will also contain all the updates of Fedora Core 6 and software from the Extras repository.

Highlights of this LiveCD:

• Read-write rootfs so it's possible to install software while the livecd is running.
• Use SELinux in enforcing mode and other security features by default.
• Stay as close as possible to a normal desktop install.
• Ability to fit on normal CD-ROM and CD-R media (less than 700MB).
• Included best of breed software on the media.
• Make it easy to do a derived livecd with your own repositories, packages and art work.

You can read more about Fedora Core 6 LiveCD here.

What is codename 'Casino' in Microsoft space?

Casino is the codename of a Microsoft project designed to deliver the next generation Windows search experience. During the developing stages, Microsoft considered releasing Casino under the Windows Live Brand umbrella. In this context, Casino was referred to as Windows Live Search Center, Windows Search Preview and Windows Live Desktop Search. Because Microsoft renounced the plans to make Casino a Live project, there have been reports that it had been shelved indefinitely.

Nothing can be farther from the truth. In fact, Casino merely relocated. “We came to realize that Live wasn’t really the place for us. Offering a “Windows” experience and a “Windows Live” experience that tried to solve the same problems only served to confuse our customers. “Why is this separate from Windows Desktop Search?” people would ask – and rightfully so, I think. As completion of Windows Vista and Office 2007 neared, we began thinking about where the technology best belonged. And with the completion of these products came an opportunity to refocus our efforts and align ourselves with our customers’ needs and expectations.

The technology that has been developed under the Casino project now has a new home. Casino is now a part of Windows. “What does this mean for “Casino”? Well, in the short term, it means we won’t be offering a public preview as soon as we’d hoped. There are a lot of benefits that come with being part of Windows: better integration, improved enterprise manageability, and easier deployment. Making a change like this takes time and effort, but in the end we think it’s the best thing for our customers", says Microsoft.

And to celebrate the move, the project has been re-baptized. Casino is now Windows Search 4. Microsoft has informed that it will release a preview of Windows Search 4 to the Microsoft's enterprise customers.

Looks like the team behind Casino started the project with some clear goals: to bridge the gap between searching local and remote data, and to create a next-generation desktop search experience building on the current Windows Search platform (offered in Windows Vista and Windows XP with WDS). The team consisted of developers from the original Windows Desktop Search team along with a team coming out of Microsoft Research who had built a next-generation Search prototype called Tesla.

How to create a Group Box in HTML?

Today I was faced with a rather strange requirement - How to create a Group Box in HTML?
For those of you who don't know what a Group Box is.... here is a screen shot of it.

This is very simple to do in a Windows Application, but here I was needed to replicate the same in HTML. Well, I did a bit of research and found a very simple way to get a Group Box on the web.

The fieldset tag is used to group multiple elements together on a page and provide a caption for the grouping. The caption is supplied with the legend tag inside the fieldset.

So here's the simple code for it:

<fieldset style="width:100px;">

Please Enter Your Name</legend>

<td>First Name:</td>

<td><input type="text" /></td>

<td>Last Name:</td>

<td><input type="text" /></td>

The output of the webpage is:

How to recover a boot failure in Windows Vista ?

The Windows Recovery Environment is an automated customer support tool integrated into Windows Vista, designed to deal with boot failures. Windows RE automatically performs the tasks of a runtime environment, a diagnostic tool and a repair system, taking the user out of the debugging equation.

Microsoft has narrowed down a top consisting of five issues involved with a boot failure:
1) registry corruptions,
2) corrupt file systems (also known as NTFS metadata corruptions),
3) missing OS loader,
4) inaccessible boot devices (often caused by installing a bad storage driver) and
5) system file corruptions (some part of the OS getting deleted).

“These problems could happen because of hardware memory corruptions, disk corruptions, other hardware issues, buggy device drivers, or a kernel software issue. Regardless of how the system got into that state, the idea was to create an environment that would use heuristics to essentially implement a differential diagnosis to identify the issue and then use the resources in the other parts of the system configuration, combined with back-up data (such as system restore points) and a copy of key system image information to put the system back into an operating state -- without user intervention,” revealed Jim Allchin, Microsoft Co-President, Platform and Services Division.

Windows RE will launch automatically once it has detected a failed boot if it is already installed on a separate partition on the system, or it can be accessed via F8. Otherwise Windows RE can be launched manually via the Windows Vista DVD or the on-disk recovery environment.

“Once loaded, the Startup Repair starts checking for potential problems to see why the system failed to boot by grinding through the following questions: Is the problem a missing or damaged boot configuration file? Is the problem due to missing or damaged system files? Is it due to a missing or damaged driver? An incompatible driver? An incompatible OS update?” added Allchin.

Windows RE will attempt to resolve the problem alone as long as the issue is software related. The system will only report hardware malfunctions.

How to change the default Vista Logon Screen?

The style of the log on screen in Vista is just another example of an area overhauled in comparison with prior versions of the Windows operating system. But what happens if you are found of the logon screen in Windows XP and Windows 2000 to such an extent that this affinity cannot be cured by the Vista logon screen. What happens if you just want to go back. Can you?

Well, the answer is yes. But it is a partial yes, and you will understand this as we go along. But first take a deep breath and make peace with the old logon screen as it is gone for good. But, with Vista, Microsoft does permit a classic style logon screen.

This is possible via the Windows Local Security Policy Editor, or “secpol” tool. To launch the Local Security Policy Editor click start, Control Panel, System Maintenance, Administrative Tools, local Security Policy. Click “Continue” to the prompt presented by the User Account Control. If you are not presented with one, it's fine, just move on.

In the Local Security Policy editor you will see two panes, one on the left with tree-view navigation and one on the right which will have the actual definitions and items to edit. On the left hand side, expand (either by clicking on the arrow or double clicking) the "Local Policies" section, and then click on "Security Options". On the right hand side, scroll down until you see "Interactive logon: Do not display last user name". Double click on this entry and you will be presented with a dialog box that has two options - "Enabled" and "Disabled", with Disabled being selected as default. Change this setting to "Enabled", and then click on the OK button.

After double clicking “Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL” select the Disable option and hit OK. Next, close the Local Security Policy editor, as you are done. Log off. When you are prompted by a request to press CTRL-ALT-DEL do so, and you will get the classic style logon screen you have been labored so hard to achieve. I trust that you can return to the default Vista style logon screen by yourselves. What do you say folks!!

Bangalore Habba is back this year

Its 'Habba' (festival) time! The eight day long Bengalooru habba , now in its fourth year, has begun last Sunday. This annual festival, in the 50th anniversary year of Karnataka, promises to be special. All sorts of exhibitions, street plays, performances by artists from all over India aim to be featured! The aim is to showcase that Bengalooru (hmmm, gotta get used to this!) is a cultural city apart from being the IT industry's fav. city!

How Sweet can a Kid be?

A three-year-old walked up to a pregnant lady while waiting with his

mother in the doctor's office. He inquisitively asked the lady, "Why is
your stomach so big?"

She replied, "I'm having a baby." With big eyes, he asked, "Is the baby
in your stomach?"

She answered, "He sure is." Then the little boy, with a puzzled look,
asked, "Is it a good baby?"

She said, "Oh, yes. It's a real good baby."

With an even more surprised and shocked look he asked, "Then why did you
eat him?"

The Annual Strand Book Fair is on

The Annual Strand Book Fair is on. And if you're looking for a bargain, then you can head towards Chinnaswamy Stadium where it's being held till this weekend.

Rows and rows of books - bestsellers, fiction, non-fiction, coffee table books - vie for space in the 4 halls that the book fair has taken over for the duration. I went over the weekend and not surprisingly, the place was packed with people. If you work somewhere in that area, a good idea would be to drop in on a weekday during lunch or tea instead. Otherwise, you'll be jostling for space with another few hundreds book lovers. The aisles being rather narrow (especially on the sides) there's barely place for 2 to walk people side by side. So, be prepared to be pushed around a bit when you're browsing!

The discounts range from 15-50% but you might walk away with a reasonable bargain if you have enough time to look around. The books are arranged according to topics - children, cooking, travel, photography, reference books, fiction, wildlife etc. to make life a little easier. The fiction section is tougher to navigate through as there are books everywhere and not in any particular order. Happy browsing folks!

How to install Windows Media Player 11(WMP 11) without any WGA(Windows Genuine Advantage) checks

After the overwhelming response I got for my previous two posts:

  1. How to install Internet Explorer 7(IE 7) without any WGA checks and
  2. Avoid WGA checks to install New Microsoft Software (using MS Tool Orca)

I got a lot of mails asking for any similar way to install the cool new Windows Media Player 11 without any WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) checks and here's the perfectly working solution.

Once you double-click the executable that you downloaded it asks for a WGA check and will not continue the installation until it was checked for Windows Genuine Advantage.

I have done some research and here is a way that makes it possible to install the software by making a few changes to some registry settings. I found this trick online and it seems to be working fine for both the Media Player 11 installation and also for the Internet Explorer 7 installation.

All you need is the following registry file which you can download at this rather spammy website(mind you) called http://depositfiles.com/files/327845. Once executed you simply start the windows media player 11 for xp installation and it should go through passing the WGA check without problems.

Disclaimer: Suspicious users should check the registry file before they double-click it and make a backup of their registry.

How to create your own mp3 phone ringtones for free

Most of us love ringtones, especially new ones / unique ones that none of the people around have. Here's one cool method to get the ringtones on your own which ensures two things:

  • First, you do not have to pay for the ringtone. You probably have to pay for the CD instead or simply record the songs from internet radio instead. So, best case you pay nothing.
  • Second, you are free to create the ringtone from any mp3 file you have on your pc and you are free to take any 20 or so seconds from that mp3 file which makes it unique. All you need is the freeware Audacity and a method to connect the mobile phone to your computer / or send the file from your computer to your mobile phone.

Here’s where Audacity comes in. Using the free, open source, cross-platform sound editor, we’ll trim your MP3 down to the exact 20 seconds you want and add any effects as well.

  1. Download Audacity, install and fire it up.
  2. Audacity can’t edit MP3’s out of the box, it needs what’s called the LAME compression library first. Download the lame_enc.dll file here and put it somewhere permanent on your hard drive.
  3. From Audacity’s Edit menu, choose Preferences. On the File Formats tab, under “MP3 Export Setup,” hit the Find Library button and browse to the dll you just downloaded.
  4. Now the fun begins. Make a copy of your MP3 file and stow it in a temp folder somewhere other than where your music player will find it. Drag and drop it onto Audacity to open it. Using the Zoom and play buttons, find the 20 seconds of your song you want to be your ringtone. (It helps to zoom in so the time appears in 5 second increments.) Use the select tool to highlight the 20 second ring, and from the Edit menu, choose “Trim.” Now you’ve got your ringtone.
  5. If you’re feeling bold and creative, browse around Audacity’s editing tools, especially the Effect menu. I like to add a “Fade In” effect to the first 7 seconds of my tone so that it doesn’t blast full-volume right away, if I’m in a quieter place and I’ve forgotten to silence the ringer.
  6. When you’re done editing, from the File menu, choose “Export as MP3.” Save it as, say, ringtone.mp3.
  7. Now, transfer the tone to your phone, either by corded or Bluetooth connection to your computer, or by emailing it to your phone’s address.
  8. Once the file is on your phone, set it as your custom ringtone.

Isn't it cool?

How to use SSH :: A basic step-by-step guide

There are a couple of ways that you can access a shell remotely on most Linux/Unix systems. SSH, which is an acronym for Secure SHell, was designed and created to provide the best security when accessing another computer remotely. Not only does it encrypt the session, it also provides better authentication facilities as well as features like X session forwarding, port forwarding and more so that you can increase the security of other protocols. It can use different forms of encryption ranging anywhere from 512 bit on up to as high as 32768 bits.

Simple connect

The first thing we'll do ijavascript:void(0)
Publishs simply connect to a remote machine. This is accomplished by running 'ssh hostname' on your local machine. The hostname that you supply as an argument is the hostname of the remote machine that you want to connect to. By default, ssh will assume that you want to authenticate as the same user you use on your local machine. To override this and use a different user, simply use username@domain.com as the argument:

ssh username@domain.com

The first time around, it will ask you if you wish to add the remote host to a list of known_hosts, go ahead and say yes.

X11 session forwarding
You can login to a remote desktop machine and run some X windows program like Gnumeric, Gimp or even Firefox and the program will run on the remote computer, but will display its graphical output on your local computer. The key to making it work is using the -X option, which means "forward the X connection through the SSH connection"

ssh -X username@domain.com

and run the application from the remote console. If you get a "DISPLAY is not set" error, it means that sshd isn't configured to accept session forwarding. To enable this, open /etc/ssh/sshd_config in a text editor and uncomment (or add) the following line:

X11Forwarding yes

TCP Port Forwarding

Like X11 session forwarding, SSH can also forward other TCP application level ports both forward and backwards across the SSH session that you establish. For example, you can setup a port forward for your connection from your home machine to work.company.com so that it will take connections to localhost port 3306 and forward them to the remote side mysql.company.com port 3306.

ssh -L 3306:mysql.company.com:3306 username@work.company.com

where -L is the local port. Again, the option AllowTcpForwarding yes should be enabled in sshd_config.

You can also reverse the direction and create a reverse port forward. This can be useful if you want to connect to a machine remotely to allow connections back in. For instance, I use this sometimes so that I can create a reverse port 22 (SSH) tunnel in order to reconnect through SSH to a machine that is behind a firewall once I have gone away from that network:

ssh -R 8022:localhost:22 username@my.home.ip.address

This will connect to my home machine and start listening on port 8022 there. Once I get home, I can then connect back to the machine I created the connection from, using the following command:

ssh -p 8022 username@localhost

SOCKS5 proxy

You can set a SOCKS5 proxy similar to port forwarding, except you don't have to specify the address that you want to forward to:

ssh -D 1324 username@domain.com

Run commands over SSH

Sometimes, you don't really want to run a shell like Bash on the host you are connecting to. Maybe you just want to run a command and exit. So simply run:

ssh username@domain uptime

and it will print the current time, uptime, users and so on.

Keep SSH connection alive

If for whatever reason, your session just dies after X minutes of inactivity (idle), you can simply fix this problem by adding the following lines to ~/.ssh/config :

Host *
Protocol 2
ServerAliveInterval 60

This tricks many firewalls that would otherwise drop the connection to keep your connection going.

5 Months Jail term for BitTorrent Administrator

Here's some news that may make u wonder if using BitTorrent is worth it. The first conviction related to the BitTorrent file-sharing network has been handed down, with a 23-year-old Virginia man sentenced to five months in prison plus five months home detention for his involvement in a BitTorrent node.

Grant Stanley of Wise, Va. was also fined $3,000 and would have three years of supervised release. He had earlier pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and copyright infringement charges under the Family Entertainment Copyright Act.

Stanley had run the BitTorrent node known as Elite Torrents with two other individuals. The service had more than 133,000 members and was estimated to have distributed some 2 million movie files, according to a government statement.

"We hope this case sends the message that cyberspace will not provide a shield of anonymity for those who choose to break our copyright laws," United States Attorney John Brownlee said.

The creator of BitTorrent, Bram Cohen, has worked to distance himself from those who have chosen to use the technology for illicit purposes. In November of last year, he signed a deal with the MPAA to shield himself from legal action by the group.

"BitTorrent Inc. discourages the use of its technology for distributing films without a license to do so," Cohen said in a statement at the time.

People still search on various BitTorrent sites for anything from pirated software, music, movies, and television shows. Which clearly indicates how easy it is still to obtain copyrighted material through this service.
