IE8 Beta 2 : First Aid Kit :: Funny

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 was launched a few days back. It comes with a rather cool feature called "Web Slices". Here's what web slice is all about.

Till now we used to goto a website to look for new e-mail's, changes in the weather reports, find the latest sports scores, current stock quotes and so on? But all this is a manual process until IE 8 came up with Web Slices.

Using Web Slices, you can get the updates of a particular part of a website directly in your Favorites Bar of the browser. If a Web Slice is available on a page, a green Web Slices icon will appears and you can easily subscribe and add them to the Favorites Bar. Whenever new information becomes available, the Web Slice gets highlighted. When you click on the Web Slice in the Favorites Bar, it previews relevant information.

The Wexley School for Girls took a dig into this feature and have presented this rather funny First Aid Kit for IE8.

    How is "web slices" any better than RSS feeds (which can show up on the DESKTOP, without even opening a browser)?
    I think this is just more Microsoft crap.

    Web Slices doesn't rely on RSS. We Slices only targets a specific part of the website - something like only the weather part in CNN.com.

    I still don't see how "web slices" are any good. RSS is compatible with almost anything (firefox, IE, Outlook, Thunderbird, your Desktop) and it is easily configured.

    And as for it being only for parts of a website, good sites (like CNN) will have plenty of different RSS Feeds for various things. For example, see the range of RSS feeds available from Google News.

    I don't see why webmasters would change over all their RSS feeds (that anybody can use, that's an accepted standard, that are extremely versatile) to these stupid "web Slices" (available on IE8 only, not versatile, untested etc.)

    Well, every new software(let alone the web-browser) comes with a small jingle/add-on which not everyone may like/use. But that small jingle is hyped during the release to make it look like the best feature we ever have. I guess we'll all agree that it is the same case with Web Slices.

    But, I have a better example now - after reading many reviews. Let's say we are looking at an e-Bay auction for a Pierre Cardin watch. We can have this as a web-slice and every time there is an update you get an alert in your browser window. No need to check mails / or manually visit the ebay site.

    Do that make any sense?
