How to open .xlsx files easily without using Microsoft Office 2007

Well, you might be aware now that - Microsoft Office 2007 introduced a new file format called the Microsoft Open Office XML Format (.xlsx). But unfortunately this format is not compatible with older versions of Microsoft Excel(like Office Excel 2003 / Excel XP) or with alternative operating systems like Linux or Mac OS X. Nor is it compatible with other word processing applications like OpenOffice, Lotus 123, or NeoOffice.

Below are some easy solutions on how you can still open your xlsx files in other systems and also easily convert it to previous versions of Excel.

  • Install the latest version of Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack and it'll be able to detect the .xlsx file format and help you convert it to .xls file format.
  • Use the Online Solution found here to convert your .xlsx to be used in other formats too.

HOW TO OPEN .xlsx FILE IN OFFICE 2000 PROFESSIONAL

As you can see from the "System requirements" specified in the download link - it doesn't mention Office 2000 professional.

That said, you still have an option to view it by downloading the Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003 (then apply the compatibility pack - mentioned above) to open the file. But you will be limited to only view the data and not really work on the same file. But anyways, you can copy the work sheets entirely (ctrl+a and ctrl+c) into a blank excel file in your system (ctrl+v).

    All the very best.

Let me know if you are still struck.

    Cheers!!

The problem that I have is this... I receive a email with a xlsx attachment. I double click to open and nothing happens. If I save the file to my desktop and double click it nothing happens. If I open xl on its own and then open the file within xl it will open. If I right click on the attachment within Outlook 2007 and click preview it will allow me to view it. I dont know why it will not allow me to just open the file while I am in Outlook or on the desktop. I am running Vista Ultimate 32bit and Office 07 Standard OEM not a upgrade from previous versions. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Jeff,

I don't have any solution for this rather strange problem out of the box. But you could fix this by popping your Office CD in again and you will get an option to "Repair Office".

Go through the repair process and things should be fine.

Also, do check if there is any anti-virus blocking the .xlsx files from opening off.

If it doesn't work do let me know.

    Cheers!!
